See how the HP Scanjet N6010 measures up to similar systems in our side-by-side scanner comparison chart.Scan performed on, Computer: HP DF194A-ABZ 484 - Windows 7 64 bit Unless you absolutely must have a better business-card scan feature, it's a strong choice for a personal document scanner. Call it another case of What were they thinking? But despite its size and the business-card issues, the HP Scanjet N6010 is otherwise a well-designed, highly capable package. On my tests, scanning stacks of cards sometimes worked, but sometimes information from entire cards was lost: It simply didn't show up in the scan results.Īlthough I can't complain about an unsupported feature not working, the simple truth is that it ought to be supported and it ought to work, if for no other reason than that both the ScanSnap S500 and the DocuMate 152 can feed stacks of business cards without a hitch. HP says that although the automatic document feeder can usually handle stacks of five to ten cards without a problem, the company officially supports scanning only one business card at a time. Unfortunately, it didn't do as well with business cards. The N6010 did reasonably well on our OCR test, using the bundled ReadIris Pro software to recognize our Times New Roman and Arial test fonts at 10 points without a mistake. That's only a little slower than the ScanSnap S500's 6:21, but it's notably slower than the DocuMate 152, which took 4:53.

The N6010 took 7 minutes 2 seconds to scan a 50-page text document to searchable PDF format. Typically, the most important speed measurement to consider when choosing a document scanner is how long it takes to scan and recognize text, as you can then index the file and find it later with a simple search. The similarly priced Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 managed a slightly faster 18.1 ppm and 30.6 ipm, and the Editors' Choice Xerox DocuMate 152 came in at 15.6 ppm and 31.3 ipm. At the default setting of 200 pixels per inch and black-and-white mode, I timed it at 15.6 ppm and 30 ipm when scanning to an image PDF file. On my tests, the N6010 performed a little slower than its claimed speed of 18 pages per minute, or 36 images per minute (ipm), when scanning both sides of the page. You don't have the option to scan directly to fax or e-mail, but if you scan to PageManager, you can easily send the file to a fax or e-mail program-or any other program for that matter-from within PageManager. You can redefine the destination for each, but the default settings scan to PageManager, your default printer (effectively giving you a copier), a PDF file (which you can define to be either an image file or searchable PDF file), and BizCard. To help make scanning easy, the N6010's front panel includes four "programmable" scan buttons.

If you want to use other programs, the N6010 comes with both Twain and WIA drivers already installed, so you can call on it from almost any Microsoft Windows program that has a scan command. Each of these programs is one of the better choices in its category. You also get ReadIris Pro 11 for OCR and NewSoft Presto! BizCard 5 SE for scanning and managing business cards. The most notable apps are NewSoft Presto! PageManager 7.16 for document management and IRIS Desktop Search for indexing and retrieving files. The bundled software includes everything you need for document management, and more.

Installation is par for the category: Mount the N6010 on its output tray (which also serves as a base), install the software, and wait for the prompt to connect the power cord and USB cable.
